Tallinn Art Week 2017 manifesto: Take a Stand

Enough of this drab, grey mass of mediocrity, which doesn’t bother us directly. Enough of our own passiveness; there’s clearly more in being annoyed, even disturbed at times. It’s time to take a stand, express your views, not fearing self-exposure.

The world is changing, and processes that affect us all in a major way are taking place constantly whether we like it or not. Donald Trump, Russia and Ukraine – really, nothing? How about refugees, medical care, ageing society, our children? What are our views? Do we at least have them?

To have an opinion or to take a stand you need to be knowledgeable on the topic, and you must have the courage to say it out loud. Speaking out is a responsibility!

The call to take a stand does not mean a confrontation; it’s about having an opinion. There is a difference whether to take a stand or start a conflict. Opinions expressed should not be rigid or entrenched; opinions must also change in time. Knowledge, information and learning is important here. A multiplicity of opinions broadens our thinking.

We live in an era and a society where we are allowed to express our views. This is a freedom, the use of which not only offers opportunities but creates obligations. History involves long periods when Estonians were punished by authorities for expressing the ‘wrong’ kinds of opinions. Has this had an effect on our mentality, on whether we dare to have a voice and stand for our opinions? History has also taught us that if we do not have those courageous people who take the floor and take a stand, we have no freedom.

Do you have an opinion? Does contemporary art have something to say?

There is also an opportunity to participate in a bike tour to attend all the galleries. The bike tour starts at Gallery Positiiv and everyone is welcome to join at any point during the gallery evening.

The program of the gallery evening:

5pm Gallery Positiiv (Roo 21a)
Anna-Kai Tõrs “Make me beautiful!”

Anna-Kai Tõrs’s photography project explores the beauty-world of contemporary men and the social role of barber shops. Anna-Kai Tõrs has studied photography by taking several courses, she has worked with documentary and portrait photography for ten years and is a co-author of the photo magazine Positiiv.

6pm Haus Gallery (Uus 17)
August Künnapu “Assortment/Babylon”

August Künnapu has several favourite topics, which he compiles and presents as a colourful assortment. The exhibition features sportsmen and folk dancers, cats and dogs and the most recent favourites of the artist – horses. Künnapu’s diverse artistic practice is influenced by cubism, art deco, retro and pop-art, and is often, even though naive at first glance, described as psychologically multi-layered.

6.30pm Okapi Gallery (Niguliste 2)
Allan Proosa “Waiting”

In his photography exhibition “Waiting”, artist Allan Proosa explores the different aspects of gender roles and sexuality both from social and personal perspective. He is interested in topics such as androgyny, human craving, desire and hope, masculine and feminine positions, sexuality and gender roles in time and social context, but also beauty. Allan Proosa has studied semiotics at the University of Tartu and photographic art at Tartu Art College and has worked as a photographer and a teacher.

7pm EAA Gallery (Freedom Square 6/8)
Keiu Maasik “Lost Friends”, curator Kaisa Maasik

The exhibition “Lost Friends” by Keiu Maasik explores the issues of growing up and the distancing of people through the mediums of photography and video. The exhibition depicts a universal process – losing friends over time and the reasons for it – through the story of one group of friends.

8pm Temnikova & Kasela Gallery (Lastekodu 1)
Merike Estna & Ana Cardoso “The Seed Can Be Initialized Randomly II”

Merike Estna and Ana Cardoso are both painters who have come together at two different geographic and temporal points to explore the medium of painting, traditional crafts and a woman’s place in the art world. The second installment of the exhibition (the first took place in Porto last year) explores what is often considered a craft material or folk art – with the artists working on paintings reinterpreted as traditionally crafted rugs.

8.30pm Vaal Gallery (Tartu road 80d)
Björn Koop & Leslie Laasner “Internal Combustion”

The exhibition “Internal Combustion” brings together two petrolheads who both explore the world of engines through their respective artistic practices. Björn Koop has graduated from the Estonian Academy of Arts and is currently working as a car designer in Frankfurt. Leslie Laasner has also graduated from the Academy but is most well-known as a musician. “Internal Combustion” is Leslie’s first gallery exhibition.

Helicopter studio – a place to meet the Estonian underground scene

Helicopter is the right place for all who wish to broaden their limits and to experience something different. Helicopter is a new, exciting and alternative meeting place for different forms of art.

Join in at the No Shade dance workshops and the Jam Session that will give an opportunity to dive deep into Vogue and House dance styles.

Open lecture: „Mission Statement” performing and visual arts

How performing arts develop from visual arts? Or is it the other way around? If you are planning to attend the Helicopter studio events, then this lecture is a great introduction to give you the perfect vibe for it. Discussion will be held both in Estonian and in English.

POOR.LIFE.CHOICES – Tallinn Art Week presents you two bands like you have never seen before.

Jesień (Torun, PL) – a musical trio mixed in the styles of noise- and math-rock with a little sense of jazz. The basis is built on strong drum beats and crispy bass, backed up with subtle but also conflictingly unfit guitar sounds.

Golebie (Poznań , PL) – The tougher side of the shoegaze/post-punk styles that connects with the melodies of alt-rock. Cold, growling and shaky sound of a guitar and the aftersounds that every shoegaze fan desires.

POOR.LIFE.CHOICES was made to change the local music scene in Tallinn. Noise-rock is a very hot topic in the western world right now and almost every underground music scene has the musicians for this genre. POOR.LIFE.CHOICES is kind of educational, but also humorous and disturbingly weird.
